WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two local students have been named Horatio Alger State Scholars.

They are Dylan Mulherin of Litchfield, a student at Oak Hill High School, and Jake Palmer of Pittston, a student at Gardiner Area High School. Each will receive a $5,000 scholarship.

Fowle elected

SGA vice president

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Evert Fowle of Vassalboro, Maine, a sophomore at Connecticut College, has been elected vice president of the Student Government Association for the 2012-13 academic year.

As vice president, Fowle will coordinate efforts of the SGA Assembly members, be involved with campus functions and interact with campus administration, faculty, staff and trustees.

Fowle, a 2010 graduate of Erskine Academy in South China, Maine, is the son of Lori and Evert Fowle II.

CASTINE — Four local students have graduated recently from Maine Maritime Academy.

Abby Hall of Mount Vernon received a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering technology. Hall is a graduate of Maranacook Community School, Readfield.

Wade Spaulding of Palermo received a bachelor’s degree in marine transportation operations. Spaulding is a graduate of Mount View High School, Thorndike.

Randolph Johnson of Randolph received an associate’s degree in ship production. Johnson is a graduate of Wiscasset High School, Wiscasset.

Joel Walker of Winthrop received a bachelor’s degree in marine systems engineering. Walker is a graduate of Winthrop High School, Winthrop.

STANDISH — Sarah Berube of South China was recently inducted to the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine.

FORT JACKSON, S.C. — Army National Guard Pvt. Dylan Leeman recently graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson.

Leeman is currently attending Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

He is the son of Joey Leeman of Palermo, Maine, and Heather Nichols and stepfather Seth Nichols of West Gardiner, Maine. Leeman is a 2011 graduate of Gardiner Area High School.

SAN ANTONIO — Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Benjamin K. Magur recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Magur earned distinction as an honor graduate. A 2006 graduate of Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham, Va., he is the son of Colleen and Gary Magur of Waldoboro, Maine.

KING’S POINT, N.Y. — Wyatt Thornton of Pittston has been accepted and will attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point.

Thornton is a senior at Gardiner Area High School and is the son of James and Christine Thornton.

He was nominated by Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.

SAN ANTONIO — Air Force Airman 1st Class Ashley E. Pike recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Pike is the daughter of Sherry and Jeffrey Pike of Winthrop, Maine.

She is a 2004 graduate of Winthrop High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, N.H.

AUGUSTA — The Maine Army National Guard has announces the promotion of two local soldiers.

Jasmine Cain of Randolph, with the 133rd Headquarters, Headquarters Company, was promoted to the rank of captain, and Shawn Grooms of Damariscotta, with the Detachment 1, 262nd Engineer Company, to the rank of private 2.
