BANGOR — Skowhegan graduate Becca McCarty pitched both wins in a 6-0 and 9-1 doubleheader sweep against Thomas on Sunday to lead Husson to its fourth straight North Atlantic Conference softball championship.
McCarty allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four in Game 1. The Eagles collected 11 hits, including two apiece form Victoria Overlock, Courtney Hill, Lona Sargent and Maranacook graduate Heidi Shaw. Lauren Hachey had two hits for Thomas.
McCarty pitched five innings in Game 2, allowing an unearned run on two hits while walking one and fanning seven. Overlock led the Eagles with two hits and three RBIs. Samantha Moore and Hachey had hits for the Terriers.
Husson (33-11) earns an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament while Thomas finishes at 14-26-1.
Maine 1, UMaryland-Baltimore County 0: Jennifer Eberhardt’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed Winslow graduate Brynne Davis to score as the Black Bears completed the America East weekend sweep in Orono.
Davis had a big senior day as she went 3 for 3 with a run scored while freshmen EmJ Fogel and Jessica Burk each had two hits.
With the game scoreless and one out, Davis singled up the middle. Fogel followed with another single before Burk’s sharp single loaded the bases the Black Bears (15-26-1, 6-7-1). Eberhardt belted a deep fly ball to centerfield, allowing Davis to tag.
UMBC falls to 19-28, 1-14 in the conference.
Baseball
Maine 10, Albany 0: Jeffrey Gibbs pitched a two-hitter while striking out seven to lead the Black Bears to the America East win in Orono.
Troy Black had four hits for Maine (22-19, 8-4) while Ian Leisenheimer went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Albany falls to 14-27-1, 8-6 in the conference.
Bates 7, Colby 5: Colby rallied for six runs in the ninth but fell short in the NESCAC matchup at Hadlock Field in Portland. Taro Gold singled, doubled and knocked in two runs for Colby (16-17, 3-9). Bates is 21-15 overall, 5-7 in NESCAC play.
