WATERVILLE — Police over the weekend arrested two men in separate incidents involving businesses and are investigating a third case in which a woman reported being assaulted in her home.

Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey said a woman on Elmhurst Street called police around 2:15 a.m. Saturday to say a man had forced his way into her home and assaulted her.

The woman, whom police said suffered minor cuts on her face and extremities, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Campus for treatment, Rumsey said.

She told police she was home alone, heard a knock on the door, got a knife, answered the door and encountered a white, scruffy, heavy-set male, taller than 5 foot, 4 inches and wearing a white T-shirt, according to Rumsey.

He said the two had an altercation after the man asked if a particular male who is staying at the home was there and was told he was not.

“During the altercation, the victim claimed that the male was also armed with a knife and during the struggle, she sustained minor cuts,” he said.

The woman told police she violently resisted the male, who punched her in the head and face and then fled.

“We’re obviously very concerned,” Rumsey said. “As reported, it would be basically a burglary and an aggravated assault.”

He asked that anyone with information about the case call police at 680-4700.

Then at 4:45 a.m. Saturday, police went to the Huhtamaki plant, at 241 College Ave., in response to a report of a burglary in progress, Rumsey said.

Sgt. Alan Main spoke with a supervisor who said a man had broken a window of the machine shop and was still inside, Rumsey said.

Main looked through the broken window and saw a man sitting behind a desk in that shop, apparently unconscious, he said. It was Kyle Corrieri, 26, of Clinton, he said.

Main arrested him and charged him with criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

“Corrieri was disoriented, obviously intoxicated and when questioned where he was, he responded that he was in Vassalboro,” Rumsey said.

Corrieri became uncooperative and combative while being escorted to the police cruiser, he said. He was taken to Kennebec County jail in Augusta and is scheduled to appear July 17 in Waterville District Court, Rumsey said.

At 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police Sgt. William Bonney was walking on Main Street downtown when a passer-by told him people were fighting inside Waterville House of Pizza, Rumsey said.

When Bonney arrived at the shop, an employee was trying to remove an unruly person from the business, Rumsey said.

That person, Bennie Coutu, 32, of 24 Elm St., Apartment 7, violently resisted when Bonney physically removed him from the shop and tried to handcuff him — and slapped Bonney’s hand away, Rumsey said.

A large, unruly crowd gathered and started yelling at police, he said. Bonney used pepper spray on Coutu, but it had no immediate effect, he said. Officer Brian Gardiner arrived and had to fight his way through the crowd to help Bonney, ultimately using a stun gun on Coutu, Rumsey said.

Bail was set at $1,500 and Coutu was taken to jail. He was charged with felony assault, as he had prior convictions for assault, Rumsey said.
