MADISON — When the Mt. Abram baseball team rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning, Madison third baseman Travis Emerson didn’t blink.

“We just had to refocus. We’d get back at the plate. I wasn’t too worried,” Emerson said.

Emerson’s single in the bottom of the sixth drove in an insurance run, and the Bulldogs held off another Roadrunner rally in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 win.

Madison (3-3) scored two runs in each of the first three innings to take a 6-1 lead. After hitting a two-out triple in the first inning, Rhett McKenney scored on a passed ball. Garrett Emery singled and Stephen Cusson walked, setting up Emerson for the RBI single that gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

“We’re hitting the ball a lot better than last year,” Emerson, who went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, said.

McKenney drove in a pair of runs with a second-inning single, and Emerson’s sacrifice fly to center made it 5-1 in the third. Derek LeBlanc scored Dustin West on a fielder’s choice to push Madison’s lead to 6-1.

“Lately, we’ve talked about giving ourselves scoring opportunities. They did a great job grinding every inning,” Madison coach Scott Franzose said of his team. “(Mt. Abram) didn’t have a lot of one-two-threes… Put seven across, I’m very happy with the offense.”

Mt. Abram (0-4) sent nine men to the plate in the top of the fifth inning. Arthur Ryan drove in a pair with a one-out single, and Sol Fast hit a sacrifice fly to center to cut Madison’s lead to 6-4. The Roadrunners had chances early in the game, but a runner was thrown out at the plate to end the second inning, and the third ended on a bases loaded double play.

“That’s been our story this year. It doesn’t seem to matter who we play, we spot them in the first few innings,” Mt. Abram coach Lee Nile said. “Then after that, we figure out we can play.”

The Roadrunners had the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning, but Stephen Day, on in relief of starter Emery, struck out the last two batters to earn the save.

LeBlanc scored two runs for Madison, and McKenney, Emery and Day each had two hits.

Carl Dixon had a pair of hits and scored two runs for Mt. Abram.
