GARDINER — The following Gardiner Area High School students have been selected to attend the American Legion Auxiliary’s Dirigo Girls State and the American Legion’s Dirigo Boys State programs:

Girls State delegates

Hannah Luken is the daughter of Mark and Cheryl Luken, of West Gardiner. Luken is a National Honor Society member and a Gardiner Scholar. She is a member of the high school band, color guard and drama club. She has received the Art Award, the Honors English Award, the Honors Geometry Award, the Honors History Award and the French I Award. She has participated in freshman tennis, junior varsity basketball and varsity tennis. She has also participated in school musical and drama productions and the Poetry Out Loud contest. Her interests outside of school include the humane society, her church youth group and Destination Imagination. She is sponsored by Staples Funeral Services of Gardiner.

Mariah Damon is the daughter of Tony and Kathy Damon, of West Gardiner. Damon is a National Honor Society member and a Gardiner Scholar. She is a student council class representative and a color guard member. She has received the Rotary Student of the Month Award, the Video Production II Award, the French Award, the English Award, the History Award, the Career and Tech Award and the AP Biology Award. She was awarded the Husson University Pharmacy Camp Scholarship as a sophomore. Damon participated in the Lit Fest and the Day of Caring and was on the prom committee. Her interests outside of school include the competition team with Uptowne School of Dance, as well as volunteering at Pittston schools and MaineGeneral. She is sponsored by the Gardiner-Augusta Lions Club.

Kelly Macomber is the daughter of Randy and Sandy Macomber, of West Gardiner. Macomber is a National Honor Society member. She was a prom committee member and has been on the class council and as vice president of her class for three years. She has received the History Award, the Health Award and the Geometry Award. She has participated in varsity basketball and softball. Her interests outside of school include assisting with basketball camps, after-school tutoring and Alfond’s Baby Challenge. She is sponsored by The Bank of Maine.

Kylee Granholm is the daughter of Paul and Kim Granholm, of West Gardiner. Kylee is a National Honor Society member and a Gardiner Scholar. She is class president, has been treasurer and homeroom representative, and is a class council member and is chairperson of the prom committee. She has received the History Award and the Geometry Award. She has participated in varsity basketball, soccer and track. Sports achievements and awards include being soccer team captain, honorable mention awards for basketball and soccer and first pick for all-defensive team in soccer. Her interests outside of school include volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, youth basketball clinics, Biddie Ball coach and youth soccer. She is sponsored by Gardiner Federal Credit Union.

Girls State alternates

Helen Dow is the daughter of David and Kathy Dow, of Gardiner. Dow is a National Honor Society member, a Gardiner Scholar, student council representative and a member of the World Languages Club. She has received the Honors Algebra Award, the Spanish I Award, the Biology Award, the Spanish II Award and the U.S. History Award. She is a member of the cheering team and has competed on several levels, including Senior Level 3, 4, and 4.2 teams, International Open Co-Ed Level 5 and the Cheerleading Worlds in 2011 and 2012. Dow’s interests outside of school include vacation Bible school, volunteering at the Lisbon Community School, helping with Thanksgiving baskets and tutoring students.

Anastasia Zajchowski is the daughter of Michael and Lin Zajchowski, of Gardiner. Zajchowski is a National Honor Society member. She is a member of the high school band and chorus. She is a student council representative and a member of the Civil Rights Team, the World Languages Club, the Gay Straight Alliance and the Book Club; and is a past member of the Art Club, Debate Team and show choir. She is the Drama Club secretary. Zajchowski has received the Drama Award and the Rotary Student of the Month Award. She has participated in junior varsity soccer and volleyball and varsity indoor track.

Boys State delegates

Ben Dickey is the son of Jon and Sara Dickey, of Gardiner. Dickey has maintained high-honors status throughout high school. He is a member of the Math Team, the jazz band and the high school band. He has participated in the Poetry Out Loud contest. Dickey has participated in freshman basketball, junior varsity soccer, junior varsity basketball, junior varsity baseball, varsity soccer and varsity indoor track. He is an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. Dickey is sponsored by the Gardiner-Augusta Lions Club.

Sam Temple is the son of Christopher and Gina Temple, of Gardiner. Temple has been a member of the Class Council, the high school band and the Civil Rights Team. He has participated in junior varsity tennis, varsity tennis, junior varsity indoor track and varsity cross country. He is sponsored by The Bank of Maine.

Frank Chepke is the son of Scott and Cynthia, of West Gardiner. Chepke is a past member of the high school band and the jazz band. He has participated in freshman football and basketball, junior basketball and baseball and varsity football, baseball and indoor track. His interests outside of school include refereeing peewee football games and umpiring Little League games. He is sponsored by American Legion Post 4.

Christian Heath is the son of Richard Heath and Barbara Osterlin-Heath, of Gardiner. Heath is a past member of the World Languages Club and a current member of the high school band, jazz band, show choir and District III Band. He has received the Excellence in English Award and the Platinum and Gold awards (Great East Music Festival) and is a nominee of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. He has participated in varsity cross country, track and field, tennis and indoor track. He received the Outstanding Cross-Country Runner Award and was selected for the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference cross country first team. His interests outside of school include volunteering at Longmeadow Farm and with the Student Conservation Association. He is sponsored by Gardiner Federal Credit Union.

Justin Ladner is the son of Brian and Deborah Ladner, of West Gardiner. Ladner is a National Honor Society and World Languages Club member and an excellence in geometry award recipient. He has participated in freshman basketball, junior varsity basketball and varsity tennis, having played first in the singles’ competition for two years running. His interests outside of school include youth summer basketball and volunteering at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society and with the American Heart Association of Maine. He is sponsored by the Gardiner Rotary Club.

Boys State alternate

Ian Lane is the son of Kevin and Diane Lane, of West Gardiner. Lane is a Gardiner Scholar and the recipient of the Highest Spanish II GPA Award and the Rotary Student of the Month Award. He has participated in freshman football and basketball, junior varsity baseball and basketball, and varsity baseball, basketball and soccer. Lane’s interests outside of school include volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, youth football camp, youth baseball camp and assisting with the Quimby Field reconstruction.
