WATERVILLE — The Universalist Unitarian Church recently was recognized of Green Sanctuary status from the Unitarian Universalist Assoc-iation.
Kempers Award for Social Justice also was given to the Peter Burgher, church board president, at the Northern New England District meeting of the Association in Concord, N.H.
Each year, the Anne Kempers Award is presented to one congregation in a particular district for its outstanding social justice work. This award is named after the late Anne G. Kempers, a Peace Corps volunteer and an active member of the Waterville Universalist Unitarian Church.
The Waterville church is cited particularly for its care and focus on ministering to those who are hungry, cold, and homeless and to the disenfranchised youth in central Maine, according to a release.
