WINDSOR — A Belmont man died when his car went off Route 32 and struck a telephone pole Sunday afternoon.

Timothy Simmons, 44, was driving south on Route 32 when his silver Ford Taurus, while coming over a hill, left the road, traveled along a ditch for some time as if he was trying to get back on the road, then appeared to become airborne and strike a telephone pole, breaking the pole, according to Maine State Trooper James MacDonald.

The car came to rest on its roof.

MacDonald said the man likely died instantly.

He said speed appeared to be a factor in the accident, which was reported at 12:37 p.m.

Simmons was wearing his seat belt.

MacDonald said while he did not suspect Simmons was under the influence of alcohol, that will be part of the investigation.

There were no other occupants or vehicles involved in the accident.

The road was closed for about an hour after the crash.
