AUGUSTA — City councilors meet in a workshop session Thursday in an effort to wrap up their work on next year’s proposed budget in time for a final vote next week.
Councilors, who meet 6:30 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at Augusta City Center, are also scheduled to hold a first reading — of two required — on proposed changes to the city’s general assistance ordinance.
Councilors are scheduled to consider adopting the city and school budget Thursday, May 31. The school’s portion of the budget will also go to voters in a budget validation referendum as part of the June 12 primary elections.
Councilors met for several hours Monday but have yet to agree on a final budget proposal, according to City Manager William Bridgeo.
That work will continue at Thursday’s council workshop.
The $51.5 million budget as initially proposed by Bridgeo would require a 3.5 percent property tax increase.
