SKOWHEGAN — A Lewiston man was arrested on drug charges Wednesday afternoon as he was walking down the street, police said.

The man, James Anderson, 21, was taken into custody on a warrant by the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department warrant team, Lt. Carl Gottardi said in a news release.

Anderson initially tried to run from police about 2 p.m., but was caught immediately, Gottardi said.

He said Anderson was searched by police who seized packaged crack cocaine, a small amount of cash and a cellphone.

Anderson was charged with trafficking in cocaine, a class B felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Gottardi said an ongoing police investigation alleges Anderson was selling crack cocaine in the Skowhegan and Norridgewock area over the past few months.

Anderson is being held on $1,000 cash bond at the Somerset County Jail in East Madison. He is scheduled to be arraigned by video Friday afternoon, according to a jail intake worker.
