PITTSFIELD — Maine Central Institute recently announced its top ten students of the class of 2012. The ranking is based solely on grade-point average.

Valedictorian is Andrew Schanck. Schanck has been a four-year member of the jazz and concert bands, a three-year member of the jazz combo and a two-year member of the jazz chorus. He participated in track and field and the Future Problem Solvers and is active with his church.Schanck is the son of Lance and Marybeth Schanck of Pittsfield.

Vy Phuong Dang is the salutatorian. She has participated in MCI’s Cultural Diversity Club and Tennis Club. She is also a member of the tennis team and was a Manson Essay finalist. Dang is the daughter of Quoc Tan Dang and Thi Mai Bui of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Acip Erdi Aslan has been active in the Math Team, Drama Team and Key Club. He has participated in the Science and Outing Club, Future Problem Solvers and the Dorm Council. Aslan ran with both the track and field and cross country teams, earning his varsity letter. He is the son of Ali and Nesibe of Antakya, Turkey.

Paula Arias has been a member of the band, the jazz band, and the chorus and chamber choir while at MCI. She participated in track and field, earning most improved player and was captain of the varsity soccer team, earning most valuable player her junior year. Arias has also been very involved with the Future Problem Solvers team, the Key Club and the Student Council. She has acted as secretary of her class for three years. She is the daughter of Felipe and Bridgitte Arias of Pittsfield.

Gary Kersbergen has been a part of the concert and jazz bands all four years at MCI, earning first chair in the KV Honors Band for three years. He has competed on the ski team for four years, was the goal keeper on the soccer team for three years and ran cross country his senior year. Kersbergen has also been active on MCI’s Drama Team and won both the school-wide Poetry Out Loud competition and the Manson Essay contest. He has also served the school as the Student Council Vice President all four years at MCI. He is the son of Richard and Linda Kersbergen of Burnham.

Manchen “Maggie” Zhao has been a member of the Math Team, the Key Club, the Chess and Tennis team and the Rifle Team. She is the daughter of Baoqi Zhao and Lin Lu of Shenyang, China.

Taylor Wright has been active in many things throughout her years at MCI, including the Student Council, the National Honor Society, the Key Club and the Captain’s Club. Wright is a three-sport student athlete, participating in field hockey, basketball and softball. She also served as a class officer for her class her sophomore and junior years and was a Manson Essay finalist. She is the daughter of David and Anita Wright of Pittsfield.

Zhen “Susan” Shuai has been active in the Math Team, the Diversity Club and the Tennis and Chess clubs. She has also been involved in the Key Club, the Creative Writing Club and the Dorm Council. Shuai is the daughter of Junge Zheng and Jie Shuai of Chongqing, China.

Linh Nguyen has been involved in the Diversity Club and the Tennis and Chess clubs all three of her years at MCI. She is also a member of the Science Outing Club, Key Club, the tennis team and the Dorm Council. She is the daughter of Cong Hai Nguyen and Thi Tu Anh Bui of Hai Duong, Vietnam.

Trey Vintinner is a three-sport student athlete, participating in varsity football, varsity basketball and track and field all four years at MCI. He has also been a member of the Key Club. Vintinner is the son of Ray and Trudy Vintinner of Pittsfield.
