AUGUSTA — A city man is facing charges after reportedly leading police on a low-speed pursuit Tuesday.
David Guerrette, 54, was charged with failure to stop and resisting arrest, said Augusta Police Sgt. Christopher Shaw. Guerrette, who also was charged with an inspection sticker violation, was taken to the Kennebec County jail.
Officer Nikolas Hample pulled Guerrette’s car over on Western Avenue near the Storey Street intersection around 1:30 p.m. Guerrette yelled at Hample when the officer got up to the driver’s side window and then Guerrette drove away, Shaw said.
Hample followed Guerrette’s car, with the cruiser lights and sirens activated, as Guerrette continued down Western Avenue and eventually crossed Memorial Bridge. Guerrette stopped again on Stone Street, Shaw said.
Guerrette never exceeded the speed limit or drove erratically, Shaw said, so Hample continued to follow.
“It was just a refusal to stop,” Shaw said. “He was not eluding.”
Guerrette again became verbally combative with officers as he was taken into custody, Shaw said.
Guerrette was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center for a physical evaluation and was arrested a few hours later.
SIDNEY — A lightning strike Tuesday morning sparked a fire that destroyed a shed on Old Middle Road.
Augusta Fire Battalion Chief Daniel Guimond said the fire was reported by a Central Maine Power crew who passed by the area around 8:40 a.m., and noticed flames. The property is not numbered, Guimond said, but it was next to a home at 16 Old Middle Road.
Guimond said the outside building, which he estimated to be 20 feet by 20 feet in size, had been burned flat when firefighters arrived. The only thing apparently stored in the shed was a gas grill, Guimond said. Sidney firefighters also responded.
The lightning struck a large pine tree near the shed, traveling through the root system to the building and setting it on fire, Guimond said. Electricity also traveled through the plumbing system of a nearby garage. The charge, which blew the top off a well and damage, damaged the electrical panel in the garage.
