In his letter to the editor published on May 22, Raymond Dostie claims that Barack Obama is upholding the Constitution in his newfound support of gay marriage.

Dostie states, “The Constitution says ‘freedom of religion for all persons.’ “

Well, the Constitution says no such thing.

The establishment clause, as it is known, is in the First Amendment and simply states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. …” That’s it.

Also, no single person wrote the amendment. The Bill of Rights was developed by the first Congress in 1789. James Madison, however, can be credited with writing much of what we see in our first 10 amendments to the Constitution.
