AUGUSTA — Signs warning of possible flooding are out on Water Street as part of preparations for heavy rain predicted through Monday.

Some four inches of rain are forecast between Saturday and Monday, raising the possibility that water from the Kennebec River could flood the Front Street parking lots downtown.

The city’s public works crews were also making plans to deal with any flooding.

The rainfall, which could amount to 6 inches, was predicted by the National Weather Service.

The flood watch is to end 5 p.m. Monday.

RICHMOND — A pickup truck flipped over an embankment and came within three feet of striking a Front Street home at 8:35 p.m. Friday in a crash police say was alcohol-related.

Richmond Police Chief Scott MacMaster said Joseph Champagne, 40, of Richmond, was issued a summons charging him with operating under the influence and that other charges might be brought as well. The accident remains under investigation.

“We received a report of a vehicle that had gone off the road and driven into the house,” MacMaster said Saturday.

When police and rescuers responded, they found that the truck did not strike the house.

Champagne had turned off Main Street and the accident occurred as he drove his 2003 Chevrolet pickup north about 100-125 yards along Front Street.

“It had veered off the right shoulder and got sucked into the embankment, a pretty steep embankment,” MacMaster said.

Fire Chief Andrew Pierce said the driver climbed out through the smashed rear window. Champagne was taken by Northeast Ambulance to Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick.

Officer Rita Marquis investigated the crash.

“It just missed a house by three feet,” Pierce said. “A tree was holding the truck from rolling into the house.”

The homeowner, who was inside the house and heard the crash came out when as emergency workers responded.

MacMaster said the homeowner’s property sustained about $300 damage to stairs and other items.

The section of Front Street remained closed for about an hour as two tow trucks worked to get the vehicle back up the embankment.
