FAIRFIELD — A benefit barbecue for Mel Leary was organized by coworkers and the community recently.

Leary, a 38-year employee of Huhtamaki, was hit by a van in Fairfield in March and sustained multiple injuries. “With her positive attitude, she has made progress in her healing,” according to a press release.

David Dutil, Dave Libby, Tim Giguere and Sue McMullen set up barbecues and tables in the KSW Credit Union parking lot. Charlotte Gurney and Sherry Schenk shuttled food from the Credit Union to Huhtamaki’s lobby at while Missy Caron, Mary Bolduc and Terry Bolduc served the employees.

Huhtamaki donated a gas grill along with seven cases of dinner plates that were raffled off as part of the fundraiser. Donations were received from several area companies as well as people within the community.
