AUGUSTA — The Maine Governor’s Council on Physical Activity recently announced the winners of its 14th annual Maine Fitness Awards, an initiative that not only recognizes individuals and organizations for promoting physical activity but also increases awareness of the health problems associated with non-activity.

The awards for six different categories including youth-based, community and workplace, will be presented during a celebration at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the State House Hall of Flags.

The winners are:

Youth — School Category: Betsy Gianetta, Pleasant Hill Primary School, Scarborough

Youth — Community Category: Youthlinks/RASA, Broadreach Family & Community Services, Rockland

Special Populations Category: U-ExCEL Balancing Act, University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Biddeford

Community Category (tie): Healthy Aroostook, Presque Isle and Mercer Community Club, Norridgewock

Adult Category: CATCH Healthy Habits Program, Southern Maine Agency on Aging, Scarborough

Lifetime Achievement Category: Ida Messerman, Brunswick

Healthy Workplace — Medium Business Category: St. Joseph’s College of Maine, Standish

Healthy Workplace — Large Business Category: MaineHealth, Portland

Runners-up: Youth — School Category: Pat McCabe and Janet Rivard, Coffin School, Brunswick

Lifetime Achievement Category: Trek Across Maine, American Lung Association, Augusta
