SKOWHEGAN — Police were on the lookout Tuesday evening for an armed man who robbed the Stony Brook Market on U.S. Route 2, also known as Canaan Road, east of downtown Skowhegan.

Sgt. Joel Cummings, of the Skowhegan Police Department, said the man was alone when he walked into the store and displayed some kind of blade, possibly scissors, and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“We have the area cordoned off and we are working the area with a Somerset County canine,” Cummings said outside the store. “State police are assisting us with securing the area.”

No one was injured and there was no damage to the store.

Cummings said the robber was described by a store employee as being white, standing 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighing about 155 pounds.

He was wearing tan Carhartt pants.

There was no vehicle involved in the robbery, Cummings said. The man fled on foot into woods along a stream behind the store. The woods and fields border Dudley Corner Road, where sheriff’s deputies and state police troopers were stationed as dusk fell Tuesday.

Cummings said police will be reviewing store video for better details of what the robber was wearing.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call Skowhegan police at 474-6908.
