FARMINGTON — A Dexter man who crashed an 18-wheeler into a YMCA minivan in August, killing a 12-year-old girl from Connecticut, had his court date this week postponed until October, a court official said.
Charles Willey, 54, faces a civil charge of causing the death of person while committing a traffic infraction. On Monday in Farmington District Court, the case was continued without other action until 10 a.m. Oct. 2, a court spokeswoman said.
The charge stems from the Aug. 17 crash in Farmington. Police ruled that excessive speed caused Willey to lose control of the tractor-trailer on a sharp, curving entrance to U.S. Route 2, where it crossed the center line and hit the minivan, which stopped in traffic.
Tess Meisel, of Westport, Conn., was killed in the crash. Two other girls were injured.
Penalties for the civil infraction can include a fine of up to $5,000 and a license suspension of 14 days to four years. Willey previously paid a waiver fee to settle a traffic violation of imprudent speed in connection with the crash.
Willey, who was driving a sawdust-loaded 18-wheeler owned by Linkletter Trucking, of Athens, also is contesting a three-year suspension of his driver’s license imposed by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which held the hearing last week and has yet to make a decision on that request.
