HALLOWELL — A city-based nonprofit organization that produces investigative journalism has launched a free website aimed at teaching Mainers how they can keep an eye on government officials and their decisions.
The site, Be Your Own Watchdog, was created by the Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, which has produced dozens of investigative stories that have run in newspapers across the state during the last several years.
The website has information on elections, campaign finance, lobbying, legislation and other topics that will streamline research on public officials, according to a release from the center.
Center publisher John Christie said the watchdog site will help voters find out who contributed to candidates, whether their votes were connected to lobbying and the sources of their income.
“We’re investigative reporters and we have lots of tools we use to find out things,” Christie said in the news release. “Be You Own Watchdog is where we hand those tools over to you so you can figure out for yourself how our government works.”
The site, which is also designed for mobile devices, is at beyourownwatchdog.org.
