The MSAD 11 School Board and administrators have proposed a budget that is more than responsible to the taxpayers of Gardiner, Randolph, Pittston and West Gardiner.

On Tuesday, I hope residents will vote to support the proposed budget.

This year’s proposal is a cut of more than $500,000 from last year. And it’s not like MSAD 11 was a free spender before this year.

Department of Education figures from January show that MSAD 11 already paid substantially less per pupil than many area school systems: 6 percent less than Waterville, 10 percent less than Augusta, 20 percent less than Maranacook, 25 percent less than Bath and Brunswick.

It is sad that with this budget, educators will lose their jobs, some class sizes will increase, some student services will be lost.

Asking the board to cut any more would be a huge disservice to our students, and by extension, to the welfare of communities. I believe this budget is respectful of the economic concerns of the taxpayers of MSAD 11 communities.
