What an honor to be at the grand opening celebration for the new River Trail and Mountain Bike Park along the Skowhegan Gorge. The trail off Mount Pleasant Avenue is something to be celebrated.

My family and I see the benefit of the new trail almost daily. Each time we are on it, we see a new face and people of all ages.

At the event U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud spoke about the health and economic benefits of this new community resource. He has been engaged in this project for several years and views it as an important part of the Run of River Project. Denise Leblanc, recreation director, and Greg Dore, road commissioner, have been the driving forces in seeing the town has days like June 2.

As we chart the future of Maine, we need trails like this built by public and private investment to lead us forward. We need to showcase our past and present as we look to the future.

I want to thank all those who dare to blaze trails like the one we gathered to celebrate. It is when people work together that achievements like this are possible. It might be a trail today, maybe a local business or public infrastructure project tomorrow. We are all trying to reach the same summit and create a path for the next generation. As our town manager said, “We need to think outside the box.”

Rep. Jeff McCabe
