WILTON — A Jay man was killed in a car crash late Saturday night or early Sunday when he veered off Route 156 and his car rolled over, police said.

Paul Caldwell, 23, was found dead at the scene after the Hyundai Elantra he was driving veered off the highway some time before 12:23 a.m. Sunday, Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox said in a news release.

Speed was a factor in causing the crash, which occurred near Colby Miller Road and the Wilson Lake Country Club, and police continue to investigate, police said.

Caldwell was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the car, which is registered to Ambra Gerrish, 38, of Chesterville, police said.

Caldwell had a valid driver’s license, and a blood-alcohol test was conducted as is the standard practice in fatal crashes, Wilcox said.

The release said Caldwell was the only person involved in the crash, and Wilcox was not available Sunday to provide further details.

Wilton police Officer Timothy Coombs is investigating the crash. He was assisted at the scene by state police and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
