KINGFIELD — Voters at the annual Town Meeting Saturday will be asked to raise about $3,100 more than they did last year.

Selectmen have proposed a $719,570 budget for the coming year. Last year the budget was $716,460.

A decision by Sandy River Plantation to opt out of an agreement for the regional transfer station accounts for the budget increase in Kingfield, which is paying more for the service to offset the lost community, according to Erica Bracy, tax collector for Kingfield.

The town budget is not expected to have a significant effect on the tax rate, which is expected to increase slightly because of county and school district budget increases slated for the coming year, Bracy said.

The owner of a $100,000 home paid $140 in property taxes in the current fiscal year.

In another article, voters will be asked to approve a slum and blight designation for some parts of town in an effort to qualify for a federal Community Development Block Grant program, Bracy said. She added that the designation is part of the criteria required to apply for the grant.

A contested race for a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen will also be decided at the 9 a.m. meeting in the Kingfield Elementary School gymnasium. Incumbent Merv Wilson is running against Brad Oberton for the position.
