Colleen Madigan Lachowicz beat Dana Bushee Hernandez for the Senate District 25 Democratic nomination, 827-755, a difference of only 72 votes.
Both women are Waterville residents. In Waterville, Hernandez beat Lachowicz, 423-346; they tied in Albion, with each garnering 22 votes.
Lachowicz, 48, defeated Hernandez, 37, in the remaining district towns as follows: Winslow, 163-148; Clinton, 128-59; Benton, 60-38;  Pittsfield, 84-58; Detroit, 24-7.
Lachowicz, program director for school-based services at Kennebec Behavioral Health, faces incumbent Sen. Thomas H. Martin, a Republican from Benton, in the November election.
Hernandez is editor for SPARK Movement, an international organization that protests the sexualization of children and women.
