FARMINGTON — Scott Nichols Sr. defeated Tom White in the Republican primary race Tuesday for Franklin County sheriff. He will face incumbent Dennis Pike, who is unenrolled.

Nichols, 50, is police chief in Carrabassett Valley and lives in New Sharon. On Wednesday, he thanked White for running a clean campaign that included both candidates traveling together to polling locations Tuesday.

“We agreed in the very beginning to run a clean campaign and run on our platforms, and Tom is a man of his word and I appreciate that,” Nichols said.

Although the official vote results have yet to be filed, White on Wednesday said he conceded the race late Tuesday night. Nichols was the presumptive winner by a margin of 1,308 to 661, with 14 towns reporting by Wednesday. There are 17 towns and several organized territories in Franklin County, and results were not available for the towns of Phillips, Eustis and Weld.
