BOWTOWN TOWNSHIP — A man who was through-hiking the Appalachian Trail drowned while swimming in Pierce Pond in Bowtown Township Friday night, the Maine Warden Service said Saturday. His name was not being released pending notification of his family.

The man, 20, had hiked nearly 20 miles on the trail earlier in the day and was attempting to swim across a small cove near the pond’s outlet, witnesses told the Warden Service. He went under about 35 yards from shore.

Rescue personnel eventually located him in nearly 15 feet of water, but they could not retrieve his body until about 11:30 p.m.

Bowtown Township borders the Kennebec River north of Caratunk.

Warden Sergeant Glenn Annis, wardens Josh Bubier, Dan Carroll, Kris MacCabe, the Pleasant Ridge Fire and Upper Kennebec Valley Ambulance personnel assisted at the scene.
