MADISON — Recent Madison Area Memorial High School graduate Matt McClintock has been named the Gatorade Maine Boys High School Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

McClintock is the first Madison track athlete to win the honor, which recognizes “not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track,” according to a press release from Gatorade. He was also named the Gatorade Maine boys cross country runner of the year.

As a senior, McClintock set the Class C state record in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 16.40 seconds. He also set the state record in the 3,200 with a time of 9:16.92. He finished second in the 800 at the state championship meet.

He went on to win the 3,200 at the New England championships with a time of 9:06.24.

McClintock was the valedictorian of his class at Madison and a member of the National Honor Society.

In the fall, McClintock will attend Purdue University, where he will compete in cross country and track and field.
