LEWISTON — Officials say 13 families have been displaced by a fire in downtown Lewiston that raced through three buildings.
The buildings caught fire shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday in the close quarters of Little Canada, a neighborhood packed with tenements that once served workers in the city’s mills.
Deputy City Administrator Phil Nadeau said the fire burned a 12-unit, four-story apartment building as well as a single-family structure next door and an adjacent four-unit apartment building that was vacant and had been condemned by the city.
Nadeau said the buildings appear to be a total loss, but no injuries have been reported. The Red Cross was on the scene to help displaced residents.
The fire was under control by 3 p.m. but still burning. Officials are investigating to determine a cause.
