Just wanted to add to the story about Don Brown. When I was 5, I would turn him on in the morning 1280 AM. Yup, no FM then. He was out on Northern Avenue at the WABK studio and transmitter site. They had three radio towers in the back field behind the studio and were called the “triple towers of power.” I would dare guess that nearly 50,000 kids over the years have glued their ears to the radio early in the morning during winters to hear him say school was canceled. He was truly part of the greater Gardiner area for all of my life and I am approaching 50. He brought moral ethics to the radio waves and was a great part of the community. We certainly need more like him.
