SANFORD — A 15-year-old boy died Friday after he was hit by a car while crossing the street on a skateboard.

Corey D. Cabana died late Friday at Maine Medical Center of injuries he received in the crash.

Cabana was crossing Lebanon Street near Nason Street on a skateboard just before 3 p.m. when he was hit by a commercial truck, police said in a news release.

Rescue workers took the boy to Goodall Hospital then airlifted him to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He died later that night.

Sanford police are investigating the crash. They have not released the name of the truck driver, a Sanford man, citing investigatory reasons.

Cabana would have been a sophomore this September at Sanford High School. His obituary in the Portland Press Herald Monday said he was enthusiastic about golfing, fishing, playing basketball with his friends and his skateboard – a long board.

“He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making people smile,” the memorial read.

He is survived by two sisters, a brother, his parents and a large extended family. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford.
