Deck fire causes very minor damage

AUGUSTA — A small fire was quickly extinguished Wednesday after breaking out on a deck attached to a Jefferson Street apartment building.
Augusta Fire Battalion Chief Daniel Guimond said the building at 3 Jefferson St. suffered very minor damage.
The fire was reported around 5:30 p.m. at the three-story, multi-unit building. Responding firefighters saw smoke coming from a deck, Guimond said. A report indicates that tenants used an extinguisher to douse the flames.
Firefighters are uncertain how the fire started.
“It was probably a hot or smoldering item that got dropped,” Guimond said.
Firefighters were at the apartment building for less than 30 minutes.

Smokers likely caused Winthrop fire

WINTHROP — Firefighters spent more than an hour fighting a blaze off Maranacook Station Lane believed to have been caused by smokers.
Winthrop Fire Chief Dan Brooks said the fire started in wood rail road ties stacked up along a path leading to Maranacook Lake. The pile is along a trail popular among young people heading to the lake to swim, Brooks said.
Nobody was injured by the fire and no structures were threatened.
The fire was reported shortly after 7 p.m. Firefighters were called from Readfield to help fight the blaze, Brooks said. It took about 90 minutes to put the fire out. “It was a little bit of a nasty fire,” he said.
Brooks said witnesses saw people smoking near the ties shortly before the fire was reported.
“Our belief is it was an accident, but there was a human element,” Brooks said.

Michigan woman injured in bike crash

LIBERTY— A Michigan woman was injured Thursday when she fell from the motorcycle she was riding after it collided with her husband’s motorcycle on Route 3.
Chief Deputy Jeffrey Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff Department said Anita Bills, believed to be in her mid 50s, was seriously injured in the accident. Trafton said Bills was taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, and from there she was to be taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Trafton was unsure if Bills was taken to the Bangor hospital by ambulance or LifeFlight helicopter.
An accident report was unavailable, but Trafton said crash happened around 11 a.m. near the Route 220 intersection. Bills was riding with a group of three other motorcycles, one of which was being driven by her husband. The group was following two vehicles.
The vehicle in front slowed to make a left turn and the second vehicle moved to the breakdown lane to go around, Trafton said. Bills slowed her motorcycle and moved to the left, bumping her husband’s motorcycle.
“It caused her to lose control,” Trafton said. “As she lost control her bike went over and she was slammed to the pavement.”
Initial reports indicated Bills was not wearing a helmet, Trafton said.
