WOOLWICH — A tornado in Maine? Yes, it happened.

The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday Maine’s first tornado of the year touched down Tuesday in the midcoast Maine town of Woolwich.

Meteorologist Tom Hawley of the National Weather Service said an investigation conducted Wednesday in the town of 2,800 verified what residents had videotaped Tuesday night.

Woolwich is located in Sagadahoc County, just northeast of Bath.

The tornado touched down around 7:30 p.m and lasted two minutes, Hawley said. The twister stirred up dirt, uprooted trees and flipped over lawn chairs in an area between Jake’s Run and Trott Road.

Meteorologist John Jensenius, who visited the site, estimated the tornado to be 20 yards wide and two-tenths of a mile long. Its top wind speed reached 60 mph.
