ALBION — Deputies from the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an reported sexual assault on a 17-year-old girl.

Capt. Dan Davies said he couldn’t offer much information on the case Wednesday without jeopardizing the ongoing investigation, but said the assault was not a random act and the public is not in danger.

Davies said the girl, whom he wouldn’t identify, reported the assault at 2:21 a.m. Wednesday from a hospital. The victim said she was attacked by someone she knows.

According to a daily dispatch report from the sheriff’s office, which offers brief summaries of police activities, the office investigated a report of rape on a “back road in the woods” in Albion. Davies wouldn’t discuss the exact location or time of the assault. Investigators worked on the case between 2:33 and 4:46 a.m., according to the log.

Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said Wednesday he had no knowledge of the case. Albion does not have a police department.

Davies said more information will be available as the case progresses.
