CARRABASSETT VALLEY –John Hickson fired a second-day 74 and defeated two-time defending champion Jeff Seavey to take home top honors today at the annual State of Maine Championship at the Sugarloaf Golf Club.

Hickson (Dick’s Sporting Goods, Topsham) and Seavey (Samoset Resort, Rockland) were tied at 3-over-par after 36 holes of golf, setting up a one-hole playoff. After Hickson made par, Seavey missed a putt by just inches that would have forced a second playoff hole.

Players battled strong winds and fast greens throughout the tournament, resulting in only one round under par over the course of two days – a first round 68 by Shawn Warren of Nonesuch Golf Club. Despite a four stroke lead going into the second day, Warren fired an 86 on Wednesday to finish well out of contention.

David Grygiel finished alone in third place at 3-over, and Mark Plummer took the top spot in the amateur category, finishing at 8-over for sole possession of fourth place.

The 36-hole stroke play tournament matches up Maine’s best professional and amateur golfers in junior, senior, and 18-50 year-old categories as they vie for cash, prizes, and ultimate bragging rights as Maine’s top golfer. In order to compete in the professional category, golfers must be a member of the Maine Chapter of the New England PGA or registered apprentice. All Maine residents are eligible to compete in the amateur category.
