WINOOSKI, Vt. — The Central Maine 14-year old Babe Ruth all-stars held off elimination, defeating Dedham, Mass. 12-2 on the second day of the New England regional tournament.

Central Maine, now 1-1 in the tournament, will face the loser of Sunday night’s game between Leominster, Mass. and Nashua, N.H., today at 10 a.m.

After losing to Cranston, R.I. on Saturday, coach Butch Cunningham felt his team lost a little confidence. Before Sunday’s game, Cunningham told his club to relax.

“I just told them, ‘Boys, they put their cleats on just like we do.’ It seemed like (Saturday), we were just pressing a little,” Cunningham said. “It’s confidence. We know we can play with anybody here.”

Against Dedham, Central Maine rapped out 14 hits. Dan Pooler had four hits, including a double. Jared Cunningham had a pair of doubles and single, and Nick Bryant hit two singles and a double.

Ben Frazee was excellent on the mound for Central Maine, striking out eight and allowing one run in five innings.

“Benny just had his curveball going. He was lights out today,” Cunningham said.
