I want to thank all the volunteers who worked on the Fourth of July parade.

I know a lot of time and hard work goes into an event like this, but I was very disappointed in the parade this year. A Waterville resident, I have attended this parade my whole life and now I am bringing my family. My children are 10, 6, and 2 years old, and they did not want to attend the parade this year because they said it’s boring. I made them go, but I have to agree with them.

It has sadly turned into a very long commercial for area businesses, politicians and other groups. I saw very few things that actually represented what the Fourth of July celebrates.

Why can’t we have a theme each year that each participant has to adhere to? Participants still could have the choice of how (floats, walking, etc.) they wanted to represent the theme.

I’m not discouraging the advertisement of local businesses, but they should be asked to incorporate their advertisement within the purpose/ theme of the holiday.

I feel that this idea would enhance the parade experience for the spectators and remind us of the real reason we celebrate Independence Day.
