For 32 years, the soup kitchen at Sacred Heart Church on Pleasant Steet, Waterville, has served area residents with a free lunch program five days a week.

Now it appears it may be forced to close soon, as the kitchen is out of money and can’t pay many of its bills. People who used to contribute $5 or $10 are now faced with their own financial woes, are living on a fixed income, have moved away or passed on.

The kitchen needs donations from individual as well as from business and organizations.

This kitchen serves in excess of 125 persons a day, some of whom are families with small children. It also provides a social function for those with little or no social connections.

The kitchen is staffed and managed entirely by volunteers. It needs everyone’s help if it is to survive.
