WINDSOR—A local man was seriously injured Monday when he crashed his motorcycle on Route 17.

Richard Glidden, 34, was taken by a LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what appeared to be life threatening injuries, said Kennebec County Sheriff Deputy Michael Bickford. Glidden was taken to ambulance to a parking lot at the Windsor Fairgrounds to meet the helicopter.

Glidden, who was not wearing a helmet, was alone on the motorcycle, Bickford said.

The accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m., as Glidden drove his Kawasaki VM 800 west on Route 17, also known as the Augusta/Rockland Road. Glidden lost control of the bike near the Route 32 intersection.

“He crossed the center line and attempted to bring the bike back into his lane,” Bickford said.

Glidden was unable to keep the bike upright and was thrown to the pavement.

Deputies reconstructed the accident as part of the ongoing investigation. Bickford part of that probe will be trying to determine what caused Glidden to lose control of the motorcycle.

“Alcohol may be a factor,” Bickford said.

Traffic on Route 17 was reduced to one lane for about an hour as rescuers tended to Glidden and police examined the accident scene.

The accident was the first of at least three motorcycle crashes that led to serious injuries. A couple hours after Glidden’s crash a motorcyclist in Lewiston was killed, apparently after being struck by a garbage truck.

Two riders reportedly suffered what were believed to be serious injuries Monday afternoon when a motorcycle crashed on Ducktrap Road in the Waldo County town of Lincolnville.
