AUBURN — It was an eventful yet anticlimactic season opener that wasn’t for the Lawrence High School football team Friday night.

Lawrence, the defending Pine Tree Conference Class A champs, had its game against Edward Little at Walton Field postponed to today because of thunderstorms that swept through the area an hour before the scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff.

“I’ve never been a part of a cancellation after you’ve arrived at the site,” said Lawrence coach John Hersom, who’s in his eighth season. “We haven’t had this before. But we feel pretty good that the kids will get home early enough and get a good night’s rest and be ready to go (today).”

The Bulldogs and Red Eddies will kick off at 1 p.m. today, also at Walton Field.

Maine Principals’ Association rules state a sporting event be delayed 30 minutes after a lightning strike or a rumble of thunder is heard.

After lightning was witnessed shortly after 7:30, EL Athletic Director Dan Deshaies announced the postponement.

“We’re not happy,” Lawrence senior captain linebacker/tight end Luke Lawrence said. “But we’re confident we can come back (today) and do what we wanted to do (Friday) night. We really wanted to play. We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.”

Hersom said he didn’t expect the postponement to affect his team.

“The guys will be good about getting it together,” he said. “We can handle this kind of adversity. We’ll get them back early (this) morning and we’ll be ready to go.”
