BINGHAM — A man wearing a surgical mask, sunglasses and a hooded sweatshirt robbed Camden National Bank in downtown Bingham on Thursday.

The robber did not show a weapon. There were two employees inside the bank at the time of the robbery and no customers, said Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi of Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

No one was hurt in the robbery.

The robber left on foot from the Main Street bank just after noon with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said, and remained at large late Thursday afternoon.

“He entered the bank and asked the clerk to give him money,” Gottardi said. “He was last seen on foot heading north on Main Street.”

Maine State Police, game wardens, sheriff’s deputies and detectives combed the area of the bank on foot and with a tracking dog. By 4 p.m. there were no suspects.

Gottardi said sheriff’s deputies from neighboring Piscataquis and Franklin counties also were put on alert because those counties border Somerset County to the east and to the west.

Bingham has a population of just less than 800. The downtown business district straddles U.S. Route 201, 22 miles north of Skowhegan, the county seat.

Gottardi said the lone white male was described as being approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall. He was wearing blue jeans, work boots, a blue hooded sweatshirt and a red baseball cap.

Gottardi said investigators were still processing the scene by late in the afternoon Thursday, interviewing witnesses, possible physical evidence and video surveillance tapes.

The bank was closed for the rest of the day Thursday and customers where turned away.

Police asked that anyone with information on the robbery to call the sheriff’s department at 800-452-1933 or the anonymous tip line at 474-0230.
