JEFFERSON — Two people were hurt Friday in a crash on Route 17.

The drivers, John Jackie, 65, of Thomaston, and Christine Urquhart, 63, of Jefferson, both were injured in the crash, said Deputy Scott Hayden of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Jackie was taken by ambulance to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Urquhart declined an ambulance, but Hayden believes she went by private vehicle to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

Injuries to both appeared to be minor, Hayden said.

The crash occurred around 11:30 a.m. as Jackie was driving a 1996 Lincoln Town Car west on Route 17, which is Rockland Road. Jackie started to make a left turn into Maine Hydroponic Supply, turning in front of Urquhart’s eastbound 2010 Jeep Liberty, Hayden said. Urquhart swerved, but couldn’t avoid the collision.

“He just didn’t see her coming,” Hayden said, adding: “It was almost a head-on.”

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and the airbags in both cars inflated. “The airbags probably saved them,” Hayden said.

Route 17 was reduced to one lane in the area for some time as rescuers tended to the injured and the vehicles were removed.

Hayden said both vehicles were badly damaged.
