AUGUSTA — Frank Edward Rondone of Augusta has been named Veteran of the Month for August at the Maine Veterans Home.

Rondone was born on March 23, 1940, in Bell, Calif. He served in the Air Force from March 22, 1962, to June 3, 1964, after completing two years at Fullerton College. He studied air craft mechanics and became a crew chief for F-105 fighter jets. Although he joined the Air Force with the hope of “seeing the world,” he ended up being stationed at George Air Force Base in California, about 60 miles from his home, according to a news release from the Maine Veterans’ Home.

Rondone also completed four years in the Air Force reserves.

Rondone was employed by McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft, working on airplane assembly, and as a master mechanic for BMW. He also owned his own garage.

Rondone met his wife, Kathy, on a blind date in 1976. He proposed on their second date and they were married four months later. They have a son, Tyler, and two grandsons.

He has been a resident at the veterans’ home since 2011.
