A Pennsylvania couple who caused a serious car wreck Tuesday in Farmingdale are wanted in connection with a robbery in their home state, according to police there.

Justin Nauman, 31, of Landisville, Pa., and Kristle Kraft, 21, of East Hempfield, Pa., have been charged with robbery, aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy in connection with that Aug. 31 incident, according to Lt. George Pappas of the Northern Lancaster County Regional Police.

Kraft stole a woman’s purse at a supermarket there and when the victim tried to recover it from their car, Nauman drove away and dragged the woman through a parking lot.

The connection between the Pennsylvania robbery and the accident in Farmingdale was first reported by the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era newspaper. Pappas said he learned of the link by reading an earlier account in that paper.

“We had a pretty good idea who it was,” Pappas said of the robbery suspects. He wouldn’t say what brought them to Maine after the crash.

Four people, including Nauman and Kraft, were injured in Tuesday’s three-car accident on Maine Avenue in Farmingdale.

Reports vary on the conditions of Nauman and Kraft, who are in intensive care in hospitals in Portland and Lewiston, according to a Friday afternoon news release from Kennebec County Sheriff’s Lt. Dan Davies.

The Lancaster newspaper, however, reported Thursday that Nauman is in satisfactory condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland, while Kraft is in good condition at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

A Maine Medical Center spokeswoman said Friday she had no information about Nauman and the Lewiston hospital did not release Kraft’s condition at the family’s request.

The Lancaster newspaper reported Kraft allegedly stole the 54-year-old victim’s purse in a supermarket parking lot in Warwick Township, about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Police said the victim chased Kraft to a Volkswagen sedan Nauman was driving, and he drove in reverse, dragging the victim 80 feet across the parking lot until she fell off the car.

Pappas said Nauman and Kraft are known to move around Lancaster County and are considered persons of interest in other crimes in that area. He wouldn’t give more detail on those crimes.

The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office has said Nauman was driving well over the 35 mph speed limit in a 2003 Volkswagen sedan north on Maine Avenue — U.S. Route 201 — in Farmingdale when he tried use the oncoming lane to pass a vehicle attempting to turn left.

Nauman’s car collided head-on near the Farmingdale fire station with a GMC SUV driven by Neil Tobey, 75, of Pittston. Tobey was also rear-ended by a Mercury Sable driven by Erica Kilde, 32, of Gardiner.

The newspaper reported police in Pennsylvania were seeking a black Volkswagen sedan.

Police have said Kilde was treated and released. Tobey was treated at MaineGeneral Medical Center and then moved to another hospital.
