FARMINGTON — Chad Luker ran 61 yards for a score on Mt. Blue’s first offensive play of the game and set the tone for a 41-point first half in the Cougars’ Pine Tree Conference Class B game against Madison on Friday night at Kemp Field.

The Cougars rode that first-half surge to a 41-28 win over the Bulldogs to improve to 2-0.

Mt. Blue racked up 231 total yards in the first half and held the Bulldogs to -7 yards on the ground. Mt. Blue coach Gary Parlin played his second team the entire second half.

“I have a lot of respect for what Madison is trying to do,” Parlin said. “They are on the right track and are building a solid team for the future.”

Mt. Blue took off early, scoring 20 points in the first 16 plays of the game.

“I just followed the blocking of Colon Richards, it was a great block,” Luker said of his 61-yard run. “It was the most incredible feeling. We didn’t want to take anything for granted.”

Quarterback Jordan Whitney was on target in the first quarter. He hit big tight end Zak Kendall for a 6-yard touchdown and threw a 23-yard TD pass down the right sideline to Cam Abbott as the Cougars took a 27-0 lead with one minute left in the first quarter.

Between touchdown passes Whitney added a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown.

“We came to play,” Whitney said. “We knew what we needed to do, especially on defense and we got the job done.”

Whitney was 8 for 13 for 116 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

Defensively, tackles Richards and Chris Wells consistently shut down the Bulldogs’ running game.

“Those two guys (Richards and Wells) were awesome,” Luker said. “They were into the backfield all night making big plays.”

Luker added his second touchdown of the game on a 10-yard burst just over a minute into the second quarter. Whitney connected with Bradley Jackson on a 27-yard touchdown pass to push the score to 41-0 with 4:25 remaining in the half.

Mt. Blue’s Anthony Franchetti kicked five of six extra points.

Cody Soucier scored on an 85-yard kick return to start the second half for Madison. The Bulldogs scored again on a 19-yard TD pass from Danny Moreshead to Austin Kane.
