A Maine native, I have spent 40 years in the film industry and have worked on more than 80 features in my career. I am most pleased that Rep. John Picchotti, R-Fairfield, is pushing forward L-384 to attract more business to our state.

For years, many of us have tried to foster the film industry here, with some success. Much more needs to be done, however, in order to compete with the tax incentives in other states.

Many of us, most recently David Schwanke, a Norridgewock Democrat who is running for Senate District 26, have worked for years to improve the film climate in Maine.

Other strong supporters include Lea Girardin, Randy Visser, Chellie Pingree and Greg Gadberry.

The crew base and expertise essential to good production exists in Maine, and three colleges have excellent film programs that are preparing a new generation of talented young filmmakers in every aspect of the business.

If we cannot entice more work here through reasonable and competitive tax incentives, we will lose this talent pool. Many of us left Maine to pursue our careers in Los Angeles, New York and elsewhere in order to make a living. That would no longer be necessary if we could compete here in our home state. I am happy to support the efforts of Picchotti and Schwanke in any way we can.
