OAKLAND — Messalonskee High School football coach Wes Littlefield was suspended Thursday pending the results of an investigation, according to school administrators.

High school Athletic Director Tom Hill confirmed Thursday night Littlefield was suspended, but would not give any details about the nature of the investigation.

Regional School District 18 Superintendent Gary Smith also confirmed Thursday night an employee of the district had been suspended, but wouldn’t say who it was.

He said the employee had been placed on paid leave pending the results of a school investigation. Smith said that he expected the investigation would be resolved in a matter of days, if not hours.
Hill hadn’t yet decided who would coach today’s game against Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School if football coach Wes Littlefield was still suspended by game time.

“We’ve got a staff that can take care of it if need be,” he said.

Littlefield has been the football coach for the school since 2003; many of the students on the team are members at his Oakland business, Littlefield Gym.

Captain Rick Stubbert of the Oakland Police Department confirmed that an investigation was begun at the high school on Thursday, but would not say whether Littlefield was the subject.
