NEWPORT — There haven’t been too many of these lopsided victories in the short history of Nokomis Regional High School football, so during Saturday’s 42-12 over Old Town, the Warriors were going to savor every second.

“This is my first real big victory, and it just feels great,” Nokomis quarterback Chandler Foss said.

Nokomis is now 1-3, while Old Town falls to 0-4.

This season, Foss, a senior, returned to the football team after a few years off. On Saturday, he had his best game this season, completing 7 of 8 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Two of Foss’ touchdown passes helped the Warriors open a 20-0 first-quarter lead.

“We seemed to get back on track,” Nokomis head coach Haggie Pratt said. “I’m proud of our offensive line. They gave our quarterback great protection, and he had all the time he needed.”

Foss connected with Jake Winslow on a 29-yard touchdown pass four minutes into the game, and with Zach McFarlin’s kick, the Warriors led 7-0. After a botched Old Town punt attempt gave Nokomis the ball at the Coyotes 17, Noah Kershner scored on a 2-yard run.

The Coyotes fumbled the ball away on their next possession, setting Nokomis up near midfield. The Warriors capped the four play, 37-yard drive when Foss hit McFarlin for a 19-yard touchdown play, and Nokomis led 20-0 with 2:50 left to play in the first quarter.

“Our receivers looked good today,” Foss said. “It was a wet day, but they had good hands.”

The teams traded scores in the second quarter. Old Town got on the board when quarterback Cam Archer ran in from 11 yards out, and the Warriors answered with Kershner’s second 2-yard touchdown run of the day.

Braden Upshaw’s 1-yard touchdown run for Old Town cut Nokomis’ lead to 27-12, but the Warriors scored with 1:18 left in the first quarter when Foss hit Josh King for a 34-yard touchdown pass.

While the passing game was strong for Nokomis, the option play to the right side worked time after time for big yards. Kershner ran for 137 yards on 19 carries, many coming on that play.

“Noah did a great job. I like my chances when he’s got the ball in open space,” Pratt said.

Added Foss: “Their ends were just biting every time on that, and our backs are good enough to get positive yardage every time.”

The Warriors added nine points in the fourth quarter, on a safety and a 3-yard run by Drew Wing.

Upshaw gained 36 yards on 10 carries for the Coyotes.
