PORTLAND — Maine has stopped paying dues to the National Governors Association, but Gov. Paul LePage is still planning to attend the group’s winter meeting so he can meet with the president and his Cabinet members.
Spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett says LePage decided last spring that the state shouldn’t pay the annual $60,000 in dues for the 2013 fiscal year. Bennett said the governor did a cost-benefit analysis of the NGA and decided the benefits didn’t justify the costs.
But the governor still plans to attend the NGA’s annual winter meeting in February. The winter meeting usually includes a black-tie dinner at the White House and a meeting with president.
The NGA says all governors are members but they don’t get the full range of benefits if they fail to pay dues.
