I want to add my voice to Republicans and Democrats alike who support Derek Banda, Republican candidate for district attorney.

I have great respect for Maeghan Maloney, Banda’s Democratic opponent. She has done a fine job representing a portion of Augusta in the Legislature.

Legislator and prosecutor, however, are two different jobs and require different qualifications for excellence.

I write from the perspective of a practicing attorney with more than three decades of criminal defense experience.

Banda was often my “opponent.” He has tried hundreds of difficult criminal cases here in Kennebec and Somerset counties and has negotiated dispositions on thousands more. Throughout, he has been tough, fair, tough and extremely competent.

That kind of trial experience is critical for a district attorney, and Banda has it. That is why I join with former District Attorney David Crook and other Democrats urging that Banda, be elected to this position.

Sen. Roger Katz
