A recent letter in opposition to equality concluded that if Question 1 is passed, “Homosexuals will no longer be able to just walk away from relationsips with no consequences. Are they sure they want this?”
Does she really believe this stereotype of gays and lesbians as self-centered hedonists who are incapable of committing to loving, life-long relationships? Probably.
However, nearly all of us know gay and lesbian couples who live in committed relationships and will marry when our law allows it. In the past three months, I have talked to scores of supporters and opponents, and almost nobody believes that stereotype any longer.
The aforementioned writer dismisses those who would disagree with her as people “who call themselves Christians.”
Heterosexuals do not hold a monopoly on love and commitment.
