WATERVILLE — Part of Main Street around the railroad crossing will be closed Wednesday and Thursday for repair to the crossing, the city’s public works director Mark Turner said this week.

Southbound traffic will be routed through Chaplin Street to College Avenue. Northbound traffic will go to North Street or College Avenue.

Motorists are being encouraged to use either Eustis Parkway, Oak Street or Hazelwood Avenue as alternative routes during the construction period. Traffic delays are expected.

Work will involve crossing replacement and upgrade, including the rail structure, rubber seals and paved approaches. Some parts of the work, particularly paving, are weather dependent.

This project is being performed by Pan-Am Railways in cooperation with the Maine Department of Transportation, the city of Waterville and Pike Industries. The detour plan will be posted on the city’s website at www.waterville-me.gov.
